Product Review: Silk Road CBD vape pens

In many ways I’m the perfect person to review Silk Road’s line of Cannabidiol (CBD) vaporizers. I’m a non-cannabis user and non-smoker deeply skeptical of claims that cannabis is some sort of cure-all.

As of late, CBD is the darling of a burgeoning industry, and we’re seeing it being hailed as magic bullet against arthritis, PTSD, anxiety, depression, chronic pain and a host of neurological disorders too lengthy to list here. Without double-blind studies, it’s easy for someone like me to dismiss CBD as a next-gen snake oil.

I’ve lived with some of the conditions that CBD is supposed to curtail, mostly anxiety and a creeping chronic back pain that is bad enough to have me crawling out of bed at 3 a.m to pop a few ibuprophen. That’s too bad for me, but fortunately I live in a state where I can find out the efficacy of CBD products on my own. I jumped at the chance to try Silk Road’s CBD/Essential Oil vaporizers.

Silk Road has three vaporizers “Relief”, “Relax” and “Focus” that you can get in either THC or CBD versions. The CBD is organic and locally sourced, and each vaporizer has it’s own blend of pesticide-free, non-GMO essential oils, also locally sourced. Each vaporizer contains 225 milligrams which roughs out to 110 four-second draws.

Relief is a blend of tangerine, spearmint and lemongrass. Relax blends both lavender and chamomile. Finally, Focus mixes grapefruit, bergamot and peppermint. Silk Road’s packaging is sleek and minimalist and the vaporizer is ready-to-go straight out of the box.

Whether or not you believe in the effectiveness of aromatherapy, the blends Silk Road has put together are thoughtfully considered. I could smell and taste each pleasant note in both Relief and Focus. However, the pure perfume-y strength of lavender in Relax overwhelmed any chamomile flavor and lacked the complex characters of Relief and Focus. Overall though, it was a smooth, pleasant vaping experience.

But the big question is, do they work?

While I didn’t find that one or the other gave me more relief or focus than the other, what I did find completely opened my eyes. Each of them put me in a relaxed and alert state. My anxiety, and some of the behaviors that accompany my anxiety just disappeared… for hours. One of the horrible side effects of my anxiety is overeating and that too, gone.

My chronic back pain that has crushed any possibility of quality sleep for the last several years did not disappear, but was dampened to the point where reaching for that bottle of ibuprophen didn’t even enter my mind. It was as though somebody had turned the volume knob on my back pain from seven down to three.

It should also be said that although there are no psychoactive properties in CBD, Silk Road’s products did have a subtle mind-altering effect on me. The little, daily mundane things that typically bother me, bothered me significantly less.

While I can’t speak to the effectiveness of CBD oil to things outside of my experience, I can speak to my own. Silk Road’s vaporizers brought me exactly what they advertised on the box: relief, relaxation and focus. This skeptic is now a believer.

You can find Silk Road products at CBD vaporizers sell for $49.
