WIRE: Maine Legislature passes LD88 marijuana amendment

From Maine’s Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol:

The Maine House and Senate passed LD88, which is an amendment to Question 1 (the marijuana legalization law that you helped pass in November). It now awaits the Governor’s signature.

The initial draft of this bill had some problems, but we worked with the Veterans and Legal Affairs committee to improve LD88 and avoid any complications for implementation of Question 1.

We were able to ensure that personal use and cultivation of marijuana will NOT be delayed and WILL go into effect THIS Monday (TODAY). This includes your right to use marijuana on private property — not just your residence.

LD88 also clarifies that marijuana is only legal for adults 21 and up and that you may not use marijuana while driving. The final bill included one provision that we opposed — it delays retail marijuana operations by three months into early 2018.

Thank you for writing and calling your legislators about LD88. Without your engagement, LD88 might have caused real problems.

A Joint Select Committee will soon be established for marijuana legislation, and we are ready to continue working with legislators as they consider other changes and technical fixes. I will be in touch again soon about ways that you can help defend and strengthen Question 1.
