It has a strong heritage that’s traced back to Afghani Indica’s, whilst its parent strains are award-winning and notorious worldwide. It allows the user to feel the relaxing benefits of its BC Kush parent, whilst still feeling the head high and creative buzz of its Sativa Grapefruit parent.

Grapefruit Kush Strain

Strain History

Genetics

The strain is grown by crossing Sativa Grapefruit with Indica BC Kush. The BC Kush has twice won Best Indica at the Cannabis Cup, it has a rich heritage in that it stems from highly regarded, and potent Afghani Indica strains. It’s a strain that is incredibly potent, with powerful effects when consumed.

The Sativa Grapefruit is an energetic and positive high, with overwhelming feelings of happiness and comfort. Grapefruit Kush accurately proves that opposites attract, as the child of these two leviathans of weed, it takes the effects of both to create a unique and balanced high.

Origin

There is some debate about the origins of this wonderful strain, as the identity of the individual or group that first created it remains a mystery. It’s widely regarded as a cross between the Sativa Grapefruit strain and the Indica BC Kush, though there are some who believe it was originally a cross between the Indica Bubba and the hybrid Grapefruit.

Strain Profile

Strain Appearance

This strain is, quite simply, a visual delight. It produces large, light green buds, which are coated with amber hairs, and filled with stunning dashes of pastel purples and blues. Mesmerizing.

The buds are not particularly fluffy or dense, which is usually the case with other Indica dominant hybrids. The trichomes are coated in hash-flavored resins, creating a sticky bud that glistens under light.

Strain Flavor

This strain brings a lot to the table with regard to its flavor. The large, colorful buds provide a smooth smoke with a fruity hash taste. It stays true to its name with profound tastes of sweet and citrus grapefruit, whilst there are hints of orange on the palate.

Strain Aroma

The strain has a strong and pungent fruity aroma, with a sweet and citrus smell. Its earthy and herbal textures provide notes of pine to create a delicately balanced aroma, with a smooth smoking experience.

Strain Cannabinoids

The THC content of Grapefruit Kush is between 15-22%, whilst it has a low CBD level of below 1%. It also has a low level of CBG, up to 1%, which is associated with treating various ailments.

Strain Terpenes

Myrcene is the dominant terpene in Grapefruit Kush. It can be found in thyme and lemongrass; which brings earthy aromas to the strain. It has strong muscle-relaxant capabilities, with strong sedative effects, helping out those with insomnia or associated sleeping difficulties.

Pinene also acts as an anti-inflammatory, whilst assisting pain relief and relaxation and aiding in memory and respiratory function. Limonene has strong citrus aromas of lemons and oranges, whilst it has antibacterial and antimicrobial effects.

Side Effects

The most common side effects noted are dry eyes and a serious case of cottonmouth, so stay hydrated to ensure a comfortable experience.

The high THC content could also lead to dizziness, paranoia, and anxiety with excessive use, as is the case with any excessive consumption of marijuana. The heavy sedative effects of the strain could also cause users to be stuck like glue to their couch if they don’t keep hydrated and conscious of their levels of consumption.

For inexperienced smokers, this strain should be treated with the utmost respect and care to avoid the aforementioned paranoia or anxiety. This strain will give you a big old case of “the munchies”, which although beneficial for some, could also lead to overeating.

Binge-eating after smoking is pretty commonplace, but it makes creating a balanced eating routine quite difficult. Prepare some light, healthy snacks to overcome this, and keep the hunger at bay.

Medical Benefits

Grapefruit Kush has wide-ranging medicinal benefits that can be used to treat or manage numerous ailments and issues. It has strong analgesic and antispastic properties, whilst its heavy sedative effects can help people physically and psychologically.

It’s effective at reducing the discomfort of chronic pain, headaches, migraines, and inflammation. For those suffering from depression, stress, or fatigue, it can help them drown out the noise in their mind and drift away into a dreamy state of being.

The sedative effects can also greatly aid those suffering from sleep conditions such as insomnia. It stimulates the user’s appetite, bringing on some next-level “munchies”, helping those whose appetite has waned.

It can even help reduce social anxiety, allowing people to feel more comfortable in themselves and their surroundings, making conversation easier and other people more interesting!

Although it’s a low percentage, it does have a CBG count of up to 1%. This cannabinoid is associated with fighting inflammation, pain, and nausea.

Strain Review

It comes as no surprise that Grapefruit Kush is so widely sought after, and so highly thought of, by users and growers worldwide. Its lineage, stemming from the highly famous Afghan Indica, makes it a particular favorite amongst marijuana aficionados.

Both of its parental strains are highly regarded, with powerful effects, yet they are almost complete opposites. The heavy body high of the BC Kush provides comfort and a relaxing feeling throughout the body, whilst the Sativa Grapefruit brings a euphoric and focused feel to the smoking experience.

Arguably, it provides the best of both worlds, allowing deep relaxation without the user disappearing into themselves in a zombified state. Its THC content of up to 22% must be respected, as it can provide a heavy high, even for the most ardent of users.

As such, it is not the best strain for new or inexperienced users. Seasoned users don’t tend to struggle so much with the heavily sedative properties of the strain.

The Grapefruit flavor and aroma are strong, yet fruity, with its earthy pine textures cut through by the sweet citrus of grapefruit and orange.

A deliciously smooth smoke, almost creamy in its texture, is one reason for this strain’s huge popularity. It’s packed with terpenes that offer a unique aromatic experience, whilst providing treatment and symptom-reducing effects for a wide range of medical issues.

It works incredibly well as a painkiller, reducing the severity of symptoms in those with chronic pain, arthritis, nausea, and migraines.

Its sedative effects both reduce pain, and help those struggling mentally, to drown out the noise and find peace, clarity, and perspective in their mind. It will easily help those struggling to sleep and improve the desire to eat amongst those who don’t have much of an appetite.

It can also be of great help to anyone suffering from social anxiety, as this strain will relax the body and mind, making social situations seem less daunting and those attending may suddenly seem far more interesting to talk to.

This strain is certainly one for evening or nighttime medicinal use, due to its heavy sedative properties. However, experienced users have noted that they can consume this throughout the day in smaller amounts, as the initial energetic high can help them get through their day and overcome any mental blocks they might encounter.

Grapefruit Kush is an incredible strain, balancing a diverse heritage and range of effects to create a truly wonderful smoking experience.
