Chocolate Chunk Strain

We have a wealth of information on this strain here for you. Please feel free to scroll ahead to any section of interest to you.

Strain History

Genetics

As we mentioned in our introduction, the chocolate chunk cannabis strain is considered to be a pure indica strain, with a genetic profile of between 90 and 100 percent Indica.

Origin

The chocolate chunk cannabis strain is reported to be a direct descendant of a purebred Afghani plant from the Hindu Kush mountains. These mountains stretch from central and western Afghanistan over to northwestern Pakistan and far southeastern Tajikistan.

Strain Appearance

The chocolate chunk cannabis strain closely resembles the other native Kush mountain varieties.

The plant height is quite high, ranging from 100 to 125 cm in total. (In other words, 3.3 to 4 feet.)

The branches focus their growth on their main bud rather than having large buds scattered along the branches.

The flowers of the chocolate chunk strain are relatively medium in size, maybe a little small. They are almost conical in shape, and are quite densely packed in their appearance, which is perhaps where they got the “chunk” part of their name from.

They display various shades of green, though admittedly they are mostly of a paler shade of green. And there is a large bundle of trichomes present. (Trichome is hair and outgrowth from the epidermis of the plant.)

Strain Flavor

As you may imagine from the strain’s name, this strain has a lot of similarity in flavor to chocolate.

In a survey carried out by another website (which I believe is still ongoing) approximately 34% reported earthiness in the flavor, while 21% found that it tasted sweet, and 18% reported its similarity in taste to coffee.

The dominant terpene present (more on that later) is reported to have peppery flavors.

Strain Aroma

Incidentally, the overall aroma of the chocolate chunk strain is very much in keeping with the actual taste itself. It’s very earthy, woody and herbal, yet at the same time is also quite reminiscent of chunks of chocolate.

Strain Cannabinoids

For those who don’t already know, cannabinoids are the name given to compounds found in cannabis plants that will bind to cannabinoid receptors on nerve cells in the brain.

These cannabinoid compounds can be either psychoactive or non-psychoactive. If a cannabinoid is psychoactive, this means that it will have an effect on the mind.

There are just two cannabinoids present in the chocolate chunk strain. More specifically, there is 17% THC (AKA Tetrahydrocannabinol) and just 1% CBG (Cannabigerol).

The THC is psychoactive, whereas the CBG is not. So, those who take the chocolate chunk strain are likely to experience a high. This 17% level of THC is considered a medium level.

It is also thought to contain between 0.01 and 0.05 % CBD (Cannabidiol).

Strain Terpenes

For the uninitiated, terpenes are lesser-known organic compounds found in cannabis plants. And it is the terpenes that are generally responsible for flavor and smell.

It is thought that due to the terpenes aromas which can stimulate the senses, that these terpenes can heavily influence your high.

There are three known terpenes present in the chocolate chunk cannabis strain. The most abundant and dominant terpene present is myrcene, which is one of the more common terpenes present in cannabis.

It’s known for giving off earthy and peppery aromas and flavors.

There are also two other terpenes present within this strain, namely limonene, which gives off a citrus aroma, and caryophyllene, which gives off a pepper-like aroma, in keeping with the peppery aroma given off by the myrcene.

Strain Side Effects

Unfortunately, there have been some adverse side effects reported. The top one is dry mouth, followed shortly after by dry eyes.

To a lesser extent, headaches have also been reported.

To a lesser degree again, there have also been some adverse psychological reactions reported, more specifically, paranoia and anxiety.

Medical Benefits

We are pleased to report, however, that several medical benefits have been brought to our attention…

The chocolate chunk cannabis strain is known to be very effective at treating insomnia. Which is hardly surprising given how many people feel so relaxed after taking it, not to mention sleepy.

Moreover, as a consequence of it containing a medium level of THC at 17%, it also exerts psychological benefits. For example, people have found it very helpful for treating their overall stress levels.

Furthermore, again probably as a consequence of the THC content, it has also been known to bring relief to those suffering with depression. Although the strength of this effect is not quite as potent as the relief of stress levels.

One of it’s more important medical benefits, however, has to be its effectiveness at providing pain relief. This is very promising, since it can be applied to all manner of ailments.

Finally, there is also a further medical benefit that has been reported. The chocolate chunk strain is also known to help those who lack appetite.

Strain Review

If you’ve never grown any cannabis plants before, the chocolate chunk strain is a great one to get started with…

Even beginners do well with this strain because it’s so easy to grow. You will need to establish a warm environment for the plant to grow, however, but this is easily achieved with the right equipment.

You will also need to get the timing right. The chocolate chunk strain is usually ready to harvest come the end of September or into October, and you will have to plant the seeds 7 to 8 weeks in advance of that harvest time period,

Moreover, you will also get a decent worthwhile yield, since you can expect to harvest between 400 and 500 grams per square foot.

And it’s a worthwhile investment for those seeking to achieve a high, or alternatively for those seeking to treat their insomnia, or to treat psychological issues such as high stress levels, anxiety and even depression.

This psychoactive effect is achieved through the chocolate chunk strain’s THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) levels, which are at a very nice 17%.

The high that you will get is quite mild, so it’s a good choice for anyone who just wants the taste of a high but not get too out of it.

But what people really love about this strain is the delicious flavor and aromas. First, you’re hit with the scent of the strain, which is very reminiscent of chocolate.

This chocolate-like scent is a result of the terpenes that are present within. This includes myrcene, which gives off earthy and peppery aromas that are reminiscent of coffee and coffee beans.

But there’s also the terpene limonene, which has a more citrus-like aroma, through which it is thought that the candy-like scent is derived from.
