Smokers will search high and low to find the original Gorilla Glue strain that has the ability to glue its users to the couch.

GG4 A.K.A Gorilla Glue #4 Strain Review

The strain’s creation was the result of chance, experimentation, a positive outlook, and a veteran grower’s nose which has gone down in cannabis growing history forever.

In 2020, Gorilla Glue #4 became the most searched strain, overtaking Blue Dream. Gorilla Glue is potentially the most famous and sought after strain in modern day cannabis culture, if you’re looking for a heavy handed fade then this strain could be for you.

Strain History

Genetics

The genetic lineage of Gorilla Glue is a cross between Sour Dubb, Chem Sis and Chocolate Diesel. This results in a 30-40% sativa and 60-70% indica hybrid. The strain has similar genetics to favourites such as Sour Diesel and Zcookies.

Origin

Gorilla Glue #4 was created accidentally by Joesy Whales when his Chem Sis plant turned into a hermaphrodite and pollinated his Sour Dubb plant.

Joesy became sick of his seeded plants and threw them out, but his friend Mardogg had kept a few of the seeds and decided to grow them.

9 weeks later Mary Jane gifted us the now famed Gorilla Glue strain. It’s always the ones who get away who hurt the most, and Joesy’s story is one that all ambitious growers should heed.

For Joesy, when he realised what his friend had done, they both joined forces and became co-creator of the strain together. Joesy was particularly fond of pushing Gorilla Glue to the medical market and wanted to use it on actual veterans who had PTSD problems.

As fake Gorilla Glue #4 strains started to appear on the market and were infecting the medical usage of the original strain, Joesy and his co-creator licensed intellectual property over the Gorilla Glue #4 strain, which in turn posited the creators of the edhesive ‘Gorilla Glue’ to also attempt to win back their brand name.

Apparently, according only to lore and word of mouth, Joesy named the strain Gorilla Glue as the resin had the effect of sealing Joesy’s hand to the telephone receiver just like the adhesive’s advert at the time.

Although some find that the name is a reference to its effect of ‘gluing you to the couch’, while some think that ‘gorilla’ is a play on ‘Original Glue’ which is the strain’s other name.

This strain was created in the US in 2014 and subsequently was forerunner for all the strain awards that year, including the Michigan and Los Angeles 2014 Cannabis Cups as well as the High Times Jamaica World Cup.

This remains the legacy of Joesy Whales, as the veteran grower and celebrity greenthumb died on May 6 2020, the strain lives on in his name.

Strain Profile

Strain Appearance

Gorilla Glue #4 is usually dark green coloured as a typical diesel strain, and often has the brown hairs we all know and love accompanied by the layer of resiny trichome goodness.

The bud is generally sticky due to the resin of the strain, giving it its famed name.

Strain Flavor

As this has some diesel in its genetics, it has the earthy and diesel pungency we all recognise. The terpene causes this strain to have a pretty peppery kick, the same chemical compound found in pepper and cloves, believe it or not.

As the strain has heavier indica genetics you get the common kush taste that isn’t as bright as a hazey sativa. Although, some find they enjoy the kushy taste in combination with the sativa-like high that the bud creates.

Strain Aroma

Just like your favourite French cheese, Gorilla Glue is known for its stink; due to its high THC content it can smell pretty strong.

Some describe the smell as the taste, earthy and diesel-y due to the indica dominance of the strain; it can have the odor of the common kush.

Strain Cannabinoids

The THC content of this strain is reported to be around 19%-32% THC and actually has little to no CBD involved in its genetics.

Some growers seek to find a GG#4 that has some CBD qualities. The strain can be 30-40% sativa and 60-70% indica, this will change with your specific grow.

Strain Terpenes

The dominant terpene in Gorilla Glue #4 is Caryophyllene which is the same compound that gives pepper, cloves, and cinnamon their spicy bite while also giving anti-inflammatory benefits.

Other terpenes present include Myrcene and Limonene which provide citrus and herbal notes.

Side Effects

The most commonly reported side effect is having a dry mouth, dry eyes, and dizziness. Expect the usual side effects for smoking, as well as abuse of cannabis. Experienced smokers report little to no side effects.

Medical Benefits

Gorilla Glue #4 is actually highly recommended for menstruating women who find the anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxing qualities of this strain can help them remain more comfortable.

Joesy Whale’s original purpose for this train was to use it to help PTSD sufferer’s sleep without fear of bad dreams.

It is great for insomnia and has been reported as a great antidepressant bud, although always seek advice from your medical professional if you are having persistent medical issues.

Strain Review

The reason why Gorilla Glue #4 has won so many awards is pretty obvious once you smoke this strain. The strain has some heavy handed euphoria and is for the veteran stoner who wants to be out for the count.

The hybrid strain, combining both indica and sativa, provides a blissful state for the smoker who doesn’t want to do anything with their day.

Gorilla Glue’s best feature is also its potentially worst feature, as Gorilla Glue is a pretty strong strain, those who don’t smoke a lot or don’t enjoy the stronger strains should maybe avoid the soaring effects of Gorilla Glue if they are prone to paranoia and anxiety, but don’t let this stop you from enjoying the strain.

Some find that small dosing of Gorilla Glue #4 can bring out its sativa side and prompt creative thoughts. Gorilla Glue #4 is an all round winner that can hit almost any high you desire, experiment with dosing to find out which one works best for you.

The strain has won multiple awards as a celebrity cannabis strain, so don’t just take our word for it.

One 2020 review of Gorilla Glue #4 simply reads ‘Good night.’ and we feel that it hits the nail right on the head..

Strain Grow Information

Strain Grow Information

Gorilla Glue #4 plants can grow up to 78 inches in height and are moderate to difficult to grow.

One thing to remember when growing Gorilla Glue #4 is that the plant was originally a hermaphrodite so the chances of this happening to your grow are potentially greater than other strains.

You should avoid letting your Gorilla Glue plant become a ‘hermie’ because this will ruin your whole crop if the seed sac bursts.

In order to avoid hermaphrodite plants, make sure they don’t get too stressed out. This involves dealing with pests in the correct manner, and not over watering or over heating the plants.

Check up on your Gorilla Glue crop at around the fourth week to keep an eye on the plant’s genders. If you can suss out the male plants before they seed then you can potentially save a whole crop from going wrong.

Although, as Joesy has proved, don’t let hermaphrodites throw you off – you could have the next Gorilla Glue on your hands.

Seeds

It is possible to get back both Chocolate Diesel, Chem Sister, and Sour Dubb seeds back from a Gorilla Glue #4 plants. Although, Gorilla Glue seeds are required to create new Glue and Diesel strains such as Strawberry Glue and Sour Diesel to name a few.

Flowering Time

From seed, the Gorilla Glue plant can take up to 7 – 9 weeks to flower depending on your growing climate. If you live in a colder climate it should be best to grow this plant indoors, whereas if you live in a warmer climate then it should be fine to grow outside with the necessary permits and permissions.

Outside grows in the ideal climates will often produce a greater yield than indoor grows. If growing outdoors the best time to harvest the plant is in October, so plan your grow ahead of this time period.

Strain Yield

The regular growers of Gorilla Glue #4 report that it can produce up to 18 ounces per square metre when planted indoors. Outdoors you can expect to yield anywhere up to 21 ounces per plant, which is pretty impressive.

Although, don’t let Joesy’s words go to waste, the resin from this bud is reported to stick the shearers together when harvesting bud, so may give your blade an extra sharpen when harvest multiple ounces of the stuff.
