One article titled “Drugs and Sports,” states: “All forms of marijuana, including the stronger sensemilla and hashish varieties, are mind-altering (psychoactive) drugs. They all contain THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the main active chemical in marijuana that effects changes in the brain of the user.”
Gamet said this is not correct. Some forms of cannabis have virtually zero THC and are not psychoactive. Some cannabis contains undetectable THC and high levels of CBD, which is used to treat children with epilepsy. The ratios and percentages of the many compounds in cannabis significantly impact the product’s effect: from “Mind Altering” to “Therapeutic.”
In a sidebar to the article labeled, “DISTURBING TRENDS,” it stated, “Among high school seniors marijuana use has increased by about 56% since 1991.”
However, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “A survey of drug use and attitudes among American 8th, 10th, and 12th graders continues to show encouraging news, with decreasing use of alcohol, cigarettes, and many illicit drugs over the last 5 years—many to their lowest levels since this survey’s inception; and no increase in use of marijuana among teens.”
Furthermore, a landmark study conducted by Healthy Kids Colorado, found no increase in marijuana use among Colorado teens despite the post-legalization boom in marijuana commercialization.
“We question why ESPN is so inconsistent, and has spread falsehoods and myths about cannabis, Gamet said. “One has to wonder if the millions of dollars spent on alcohol and pharmaceutical advertising has influenced ESPN’s editorial stance.”
