PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Marijuana Policy Project will host an educational event in Philadelphia on Sunday to educate patients and their families about Pennsylvania’s recently-enacted medical marijuana law.
Potential patients and caregivers will gather at the William Way House from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET. Experts will present information and answer questions.
Topics will include the science behind medical marijuana, the content of the law, and tips for talking to physicians.
Speakers will include: Sen. Mike Folmer, who championed the bill in the legislature; Dr. Jahan Marcu, marijuana researcher and chief scientist with Americans for Safe Access; Cara Salemme, mother of a child with a seizure disorder and a founding member of Campaign for Compassion; and Becky Dansky, legislative analyst for the Marijuana Policy Project.
The Medical Marijuana Act (Act 16) will allow patients with qualifying conditions and their doctors’ recommendations to use and safely access medical marijuana. The qualifying conditions include cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, seizures, autism, sickle cell anemia, and intractable pain if conventional therapies or opiates are contraindicated or ineffective.
“This week, Act 16 went into effect, but that is only the first step toward an effective medical marijuana program in Pennsylvania,” said Becky Dansky, a legislative analyst for the Marijuana Policy Project. “While we work with advocates and the Department of Health to ensure a swift and thoughtful implementation process, we must also prioritize educating patients, caregivers, and doctors.”
Representatives from the Marijuana Policy Project will be available for interviews before and after the event. Photographing attendees or using their names on the record is prohibited without the express permission of the subjects in order to ensure patient privacy.
